A coalition of Gulf Coast aerospace employers, state workforce boards, and the U.S. Department of Labor has launched a new Registered Apprenticeship program specifically designed to help military veterans transition into high-paying aerospace manufacturing careers. The program, branded as AeroVets Gulf Coast, is accepting its first cohort of 40 apprentices this fall.
Why Veterans?
Military veterans bring a unique combination of technical discipline, safety culture, and hands-on mechanical experience that aerospace manufacturers prize. Many veterans already hold security clearances, which is a significant advantage for contractors working on defense-adjacent launch programs.
Program coordinators say the challenge has historically been bridging the gap between military occupational specialties and civilian aerospace credentials. The new apprenticeship addresses that directly by mapping common MOS codes to aerospace technician pathways and providing targeted upskilling rather than starting from scratch.
Program Structure
AeroVets Gulf Coast is a 24-month, earn-while-you-learn program. Apprentices work full-time at a participating employer — including Aerojet Rocketdyne, Rocket Lab, and several Tier 1 suppliers — while completing 144 hours of related technical instruction per year through Delgado Community College and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
Starting wages are set at $22–$26 per hour depending on prior experience, with structured raises at 6, 12, and 18 months. Upon completion, graduates receive a nationally recognized DOL Certificate of Completion and are eligible for direct hire at their host employer.
Funding and Support
The program is funded through a combination of the Louisiana FastStart workforce initiative, Mississippi Development Authority aerospace grants, and employer contributions. Veterans also qualify for GI Bill housing allowances during the apprenticeship, which can add $1,500–$2,200 per month in supplemental income depending on location.
The coalition has committed to running at least three cohorts per year, with a goal of placing 300 veterans into aerospace careers by 2028.
How to Apply
Applications for the fall 2026 cohort are open through October 1, 2026. Eligible candidates must be honorably discharged veterans or active-duty service members within 180 days of separation. No prior aerospace experience is required.
Interested veterans can apply through the StarScouter Jobs Board, which lists all open apprenticeship positions, or contact the Gulf Coast Workforce Development Board directly for pre-application counseling.
